Lizardos Engineering Associates, with offices in Mineola, NY and New York City seeks a Controller to oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency.

Job Overview:
The Controller will oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in general accounting and demonstrate significant experience in the Professional Consulting Services industry. This hands-on role involves direct involvement in quarterly close cycles, financial statement preparation, and reconciliation processes, while also managing Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Billing, and supervising staff.
This role includes a transition period, during which the successful candidate will assist the current Controller for approximately 3–6 months, eventually assuming full Controller responsibilities upon the incumbent’s retirement.
This full-time position is based in our Mineola office. Following the initial training and orientation period, the Controller may have the option to work remotely one day per week, subject to feasibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting: Timely preparation, analysis, and presentation of all multi-company financial reports, statements, and tax return filings on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, including Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules. Annually prepare data for 1099 and coordinate with outside CPA for electronic filing.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a small team of accounting professionals, fostering collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Operations Management: Oversee General Ledger accruals, Accounts Payable, Receivable, Payroll, and Billing. Provide financial data to the Marketing Department or Partners as needed.
- Policy Development: Recommend and enforce policies and procedures related to financial and business practices, including general ledger and job cost accounting.
- Audit and Compliance: Manage external audit reviews and assist with compliance, including NY State quarterly EEO/MWBE reporting and annual insurance renewal applications.
- Banking and Reconciliations: Conduct bank reconciliations for multiple companies and manage the annual Line of Credit renewal process.
- Technology and Tools: Leverage expertise in accounting platforms such as Deltek Vision, Deltek VantagePoint, SAP, and Oracle, as well as advanced Excel capabilities (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, Pivot tables).
- Special Projects: Lead special projects and initiatives as assigned to support the firm's strategic goals. During the period until the Controller’s retirement, serve as a backup to the Controller position as it relates to daily cash (monitor daily cash transactions, process ACH/wire transfers).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; MBA an/or CMA a plus.
- 8–10 years of progressive experience in accounting, with significant time in the Professional Consulting Services industry.
- Experience in the A/E/C industry (Architecture/Engineering/Construction), including project accounting and WIP schedule preparation, is highly preferred.
- Experience in preparing WIP (Work in Progress) schedules.
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and internal controls. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while consistently meeting deadlines.
- Proficiency with SQL and the MS Office Suite, particularly Excel.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
