North suburbs private organization, in sports & recreation has a new permanent opportunity for a Controller due to retirement. Great opportunity that prioritizes quality of life/work balance with a lot of flexibility and roughly a 30-35/hour work week. This is full-time, permanent with full benefits. The Controller role is hands on, responsible for leading the Accounting/Finance function, overseeing a small team along with a variety of other work contributing to the overall running of the organization.

Salary: Around $90,000 to $110,000 per year.

Controller Responsibilities:
  • Hands on responsibility for the accounting/finance functions
  • Directly oversee a small, well-established group of office employees (1-2+)
  • ME, QE, YE close
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements
  • Manage bank accounts, bank relationships, monthly reconciliations and manage cash flow
  • Main point of contact and liaison with external accounting firm
  • Work closely with Management team to plan yearly operational and capital budgets
  • Oversee A/P and billing processes
  • Prepare monthly Sales Tax returns
  • Responsible for Human Resources administration for a small group of employees
  • Responsible for submitting bi-weekly payroll to the outsourced payroll service provider
  • Review payroll tax filings
  • Review and administer workers compensation and property/casualty insurance
  • Facilitate employee benefits including 401K, Health/Dental/Vision/Life & Disability insurance
  • Main point of contact and liaison for the outsourced Information Technology needs
  • Maintain business licenses for food, beverage and sales


Ideal qualifications for the Controller position:
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance or related
  • Strong ME/YE close, Financial Statements, etc.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Interest in working with a small group, very stable, long standing, and highly recognized organization
  • Ability to work very independently with minimal oversight
  • Strong organizational, presentation and leadership skills
