JOB TITLE: Traffic Controller

Full-Time/Non Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Traffic Controller is responsible for maintaining a safe and efficient flow of traffic in designated areas in the Recycle Yard while successfully providing protection to employees and the public. The ideal candidate is reliable and committed to maintaining a safe work environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow in the unloading area, inspecting waste received at the Recycle Yard for hazardous and unauthorized waste, sorting of waste by type, and ensuring that drivers and pedestrians are kept at a safe distance from all heavy equipment and industrial operations.
  • Direct internal/external customers in a safe and efficient manner. Assist with and provide direction(s) to backing vehicle.
  • Provide detailed information of load to rest of team to effectively place customer.
  • Maintain constant communication with Equipment Operators and other Traffic Controllers.
  • Provide adequate area for neighboring vehicles to offload safely.
  • Watch for overhead clearances while trucks are dumping to avoid building repairs.
  • Make sure the tip floor is clear of debris to avoid equipment and property damage.
  • Strictly adhere to safe work practices
  • Determine traffic flow and vehicle placement locations based on current conditions.
  • Assist with and provide direction(s) to backing vehicles using approved hand signals.
  • Never leave the position until relieved, communicate any issues to team lead.
  • Know where fellow employees and equipment are, be aware of changes, and never stand among workers and equipment and always remain clearly visible to traffic.
  • Attend daily safety meetings.
  • Be positioned to compensate for limited sight distance, to provide maximum advance warning and always remain clearly visible to traffic.
  • Maintain continuous communication with any customer by being courteous, yet authoritative.
  • Establish eye contact with drivers to whom must be given direction
  • Ensures that all work zone areas are clean, safe, secure, and well maintained.
  • Follows proper radio policy and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand traffic signals/signs, traffic plans and customer requests.
  • Ability to prioritize and adjust work activities to be effective and efficient.
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to give clear instructions.
  • Keen attention to detail and situational awareness to maintain the safety of the work environment.
  • Maintain accuracy and composure while under pressure.
  • Bilingual English & Spanish preferred.

EDUCATION

High school education or equivalent preferred but not required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

A Traffic Controller must have the ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions in English. Additionally, a traffic controller must have the ability to speak English and effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization. Spanish speaking is preferred bu tnot required,

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must have strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must have the ability to continually stand and/or walk over variable terrain for the work period.

  • Must have ability to complete repetitive tasks (twisting, turning, bending/stooping, reaching above and below shoulder, grip

  • Must safely manage traffic control through active work areas while gripping and/or grasping a traffic-control wand and utilizing radio communication for the work period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is generally performed indoors at a designated construction and demolition (C&D) facility. A Traffic Control Lead is exposed to and works with organic material and general debris and is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, physical hazards from heavy equipment, potentially dangerous tools and equipment, traffic, fumes or airborne particles, paints, solvents, loud noise(s). The position may include outside weather conditions. Required to put on protective outfits, like gloves, safety footwear, safety eyeglasses, earplugs, hardhat with flashing warning lights.
