Job Description Summary
The Assistant Controller, Financial Operations is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of financial operations, which includes, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Travel/Procurement Card Services The Assistant Controller will also be an integral member of the Controller's team, assisting with the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring that financial statements and internal and external reporting are prepared to the highest standard. The Assistant Controller will also work closely with the Controller, Associate Vice President of Finance and the Vice President for Administration & Finance and CFO/Treasurer to ensure all critical components of the Controller's organization are functioning efficiently and effectively.

Essential Duties
  • Provide leadership to the staff of 4 within financial operations to foster a standard of superior service to all customers, working collaboratively with academic and administrative departments.
  • In conjunction with the Controller, and Assistant Controller, Financial Reporting, assist with the month-end close process and assist in the year-end close process ensuring accurate reporting in a timely manner
  • Oversee payroll processing including accurate payroll, withholding and tax processing and reporting including MAPFML.
  • Oversee accounts payable functions such as: invoice payment, travel, P-card, employee and non-employee reimbursements
  • Manage daily banking operations including wires/ACH processing, and fraud monitoring
  • Prepare and review reconciliations and assist with other accounting functions including but not limited to providing necessary information and documentation for audits.
  • Coordinate with Benefits department on annual 403B audit and other related reporting.
  • Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations
  • Process general ledger transactions and prepare and review journal entries to properly record financial transactions
  • Assist with troubleshooting financial accounting issues within the system for both the Financial Operations team and across the University
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 6 -8 years of experience, preferably in higher education accounting, finance or similar department.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • Must have strong management skills.
  • Must be a team player with a demonstrated interpersonal skills in a customer service setting.
  • Must be highly detail-oriented with strong analytic, problem-solving, financial and organizational skills
  • Ability to independently manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities efficiently
  • Must be comfortable learning and using cloud-based complex financial system


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in higher education or other non-profit payroll
  • Workday experience highly preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
